Today, President Abdel Fattah El Sisi met with Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi, on the sidelines of the first League of States (LAS)-EU Summit in Sharm El Sheikh.

President El Sisi highlighted the outstanding relations that characterize the Egyptian-Tunisian relations and noted Egypt’s keenness to further promote the cooperation frameworks at various levels, especially enhancing effective channels of communication between the two sides at the economic level, maximizing trade exchange and increasing inter-investments.

The President also welcomed the Tunisian president’s invitation to attend the upcoming Arab Summit. He expressed that Egypt is confident that Tunisia will succeed in organizing this significant event as well as Egypt’s readiness to collaborate with the Tunisian side to ensure that the summit results in influential decisions commensurate with the challenges and crises that the region is facing, especially in light of the two countries’ agreement on most of the regional issues and topics that will be presented during the summit.

The Tunisian president confirmed the close and special relations between the two countries at the official and popular levels and lauded Egypt’s achievements at the domestic level in the areas of security, stability and development. This has enabled Egypt to restore its leading role at the regional and international levels, which manifested in many examples such as its chairmanship of the African Union and hosting the first League of States (LAS)-EU Summit. This shall have a positive impact on joint African and Arab action and efforts to reach political solutions to the ongoing crises in the region.

The Tunisian president was keen to update President El Sisi on the current arrangements to host the Arab Summit in March and looked forward to the success of the summit, in the framework of working to maximize cooperation and solidarity among the Arab brothers.

President El Sisi affirmed Egypt’s position in support of Tunisia in the face of terrorism and supporting measures taken by the Tunisian leadership to maintain security in the country. He referred to the similar circumstances and challenges that the two countries face and expressed the need to bolster security cooperation and exchange of information on terrorist groups and those returning from conflict zones, who pose a common threat to both countries and the entire region.
